Its large bare ears resemble those of a bat. The huge eyes help it to see at night. The eyeballs of a tarsier do not move as humans do, but the head can turn in an arc of 106 to 170 degrees.

The Philippine tarsier is a very small animal. It usually measures at about 16 centimeters in height. When in its natural habitat, it is difficult to see. Different species of tarsiers are commonly found in tropical Southeast Asia.

They live in the jungles of the Malay Archipelago. Few people can see it, for it is active only after dark. They feed by night. They leap through the trees, clutching a branch with their almost human hands.

This strange tiny animal is one man's close relatives. It is a mammal, belonging to the order of Primates, which also includes man, the apes, the monkeys and the lemurs. Scientists belive that the tarsier is closer to the common ancestor of man than any of the other primates. Little is known of its breeding habits, but it is believed to bear only a single young at a time.
