The selection dealt with Philippine tradition and history, religion, philosopy, ethics, literature and the arts, politics and government, other more or less significant matters bearing on the Philippine culture.
The essay took a form similar to that used by British and American writers, but because the essay is a free form of composition, it soon developed its own personality. Dear Devices, a book of familiar essays, published in 1933, demonstrated a variety of subject matter and individual styles. It also showed originality and freshness hardly to be found in Western models. It successfully projected Philippine customs and traditions. Some of the most notable collection of essays are:
Literature and Society by Salvador Lopez
The Birth of Discontent by I.V. Mallari
Horizons from the Nipa Hut by Francisco Icasiano
The Filipino Way of Life by Camilo Osias
Collections authored by Carlos P. Romulo:
What Makes a Nation Great
My Brother Americans
I Saw the Philippines Rise
Mother America
Little Things
In the field of criticism, Leopoldo Yabes and Fr. Miguel Bernad have added their contributions to the essay.
