Kahimunan Festival, Butuan City, Philippines

On the third Sunday of January, the people of Butuan City is busy preparing for the city's Kahimunan Festival. Their is excitement and a feeling of joy in the air as one of the colorful festivals in the Philippines is celebrated with a variety of colorful activities.
At the height of the Kahimunan Festival, the streets of Butuan City is filled with participants dancing to native and exotic music and dressed in colorful costumes.
The rest of the residents decorate the streets with colorful ornaments such as baskets, flowers, and other decorations made of colorful straws and strings.

The festival got its name from the word "gathering" which means Kahimunan in the local dialect of Butuan City. Kahimunan festival is meant to be the gathering of the faithful to show gratitude towards one of the city's patron saints, the Child Jesus. It is the Butuan version of Cebu City's Sinulog Festival. The residents of Butuan City, through the celebration of the festival, give thanks for the blessings that they have received and the bountiful harvest provided by patron saint.
