Kadayawan comes from the term "madayaw." It is a term used long ago in Southern Mindanao to greet someone in a warm and friendly way. It also denotes a thing which is beautiful, good, profitable, or valuable - things which has good attributes attached to it. From this comes the word Kadayawan.

 

Kadayawan Festival is basically a celebration of good harvests, and a thanksgiving for a good life provided by the "creator" of the Earth in the month of August.

The Kadayawan festival is celebrated by all Davawenos from all walks of life. The street parade is made spectacular by the street dancers clad in colorful tribal costumes in a variety of styles.

The Kadayawan Festival is the time also when the people of Davao City get to show the beauty of the city's flower industry. Different kinds of picturesque floral floats are paraded in the street during the festival. While other people are busy preparing for the activities during the festival, others adorn the street with fruits and vegetables to complete the city's thanksgiving for a good harvest.

Aside from these activities, Davao City also organizes programs to complement the enjoyment and amusement of the people such boat races, dance competitions and the Miss Kadayawan beauty contest.

The Kadayawan Festival showcases a complete thanksgiving celebration which made it renowned all over the Philippines.
